grad 10: herodotus

Grad 10: 2012 will meet this Wednesday at 5 pm in Northern Lights to discuss a selection from Herodotus’s Histories. We’ll begin with some remarks from Mr. Micah Akuezue, resident Herodotus enthusiast, who has kindly chosen the following passages for us: 1.1-33, 46-56, 65-68, 85-92; 2.52-57; 3.38, 78-87; 5.56-80; 7.100-107, 133-7, 152, 205-238, 8.113-119, 9.114-122. Please note that the passages in bold have been added or modified from the previous e-mail sent out last week. The total reading assignment is still under 45 pages or so. All the passages can still be found on Perseus.

(getting down to) business: passwords

A note on the newly resurrected field paper & prospectus archive: two separate passwords are required to access papers. The first gives you access to the page itself; the second is required to open the PDFs after you’ve downloaded them and is the same for all of them. These two levels of security are intended to make sure that only Ethos members are reading one another’s work. Please email ethos@ucla.edu for the passwords.

Wednesday, January 18th, at 4:30 PM at Palomino in Westwood: winter quarter happy hour. Come socialize in the public sphere!

Friday, January 20 at 4:15 in Bunche 4357: Panel and discussion on writing and submitting theory field papers. How else would you rather spend your Friday afternoon? Reading Heidegger alone in your cube? You can do that later!

A word on what we’ll be getting up to:

Next Wednesday, January 18th, at 4:30 PM at Palomino in Westwood, we’ll have an informal kick-off happy hour for the quarter which will hopefully involve all the theory geekery you can stomach, and some wine.

On Wednesday, January 25th at 5:00 PM at Northern Lights, we’ll initiate Grad 10: the 2012 edition, we will discuss a modest selection (see here) from The Histories of Herodotus. Mr. Micah Akuezue has kindly offered to provide initial comments and get things rolling.

We’ll be announcing the schedule for the Field Paper/Conference Paper Workshop quite soon.

Lastly, Film, in Theory has an excellent, if tentative slate, ahead, including Star Trek and Harry Potter, as well as a western and a kung-fu classic. Up first in this eclectic lineup will be Mr. Will Stahl and his reading of Predator, “the most important political film of the past twenty-five years.”

Life! Goes On – This Thursday

Maybe you’ve heard – there’s a three-day conference convening this week on campus and in Westwood called Life! Motions, Motives, Emotions (subtitle: A Festival of the Passions). Each day of the conference is oriented toward a different aspect of the ‘emotional turn,’ a paradigm shift affecting disciplines across the university. Organized by Giulia Sissa, a number of your colleagues and professors are involved, so do try to swing by - RSVPs are kindly requested. Likewise, if you’re interested in volunteering, it’s not too late – please email Libby, Thea, or myself.

Because of the grad student meeting with a job candidate tomorrow at 4, Ethos will now be screening Zombieland at 5pm in Bunche 9383. Don’t worry, Ms. Mzilikazi Koné and Ms. Libby Barringer will still be offering their interpretations of our generation’s Nosferatu.

Film, In Theory makes its triumphant return on Friday, October 28, at 4 pm in Bunche 4357. Ms. Mzilikazi Koné and Ms. Libby Barringer will offer dueling interpretations of 2009′s best zombie apocalypse/road trip/comedy/horror film. See the enticing flyer below.
